Mark Twain Take On Trump & Democratic Socialism

A couple days ago I was enjoying a conversation with one of my Texas friends when the Trump subject came up. The Texas friend opined wonderment regarding how anyone could still think Trump being president is a good thing, what with all the disasters, from the criminal Iran war, the resulting surge in the cost of gas, the destruction of the White House East Wing, the paving of the Jackie Kennedy Rose Garden, the absurd tariffs, the constant lies, alienating our former allies. The list goes on and on.

I told my Texas friend that I had a friend or two who claimed to be Trump supporters back in the less disastrous first term, who I'd basically cut off from contact. I said I'd message one of those and see if that person has wised up or is still thinking Trump is doing a good job.

So, I messaged that person, someone I knew all the way back to grade school. After some pleasantries I got to the point and asked...

It is now the year 2026. Are you still a Trump supporter? Or have you, well, opted not to be????

The reply is what has prompted these graphics about "Democratic Socialism."

And here is the reply to my probing Trump question...

Hi Durango, if I recall, this line of conversation wasn’t productive the last time we pursued it? In answer to your question, I am certainly not for ‘Democratic Socialism’ for all the times it has been attempted and failed. We do however, still adhere to Mark Twain’s philosophy that “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, etc., and continue to travel as much as possible. We’re off to Alaska next week and Spain in Sept/Oct. We were in San Antonio in April for a quick visit. But in answer to your query, yes.

The above is a classic example of how absurdly twisted it is to try and communicate with these types. They do not operate in a world based on reality, facts, reason and logic. To have learned, the past several years, that there are millions of them, has been such a disturbing revelation. Millions too dumb to comprehend how dumb Trump is.

Clearly this person does not know what Democratic Socialism is. And the fact that Democratic Socialism has worked quite successfully in a lot of countries. Including our dear United States of America. Our economy has many Democratic Socialist aspects. Our neighbor to the north, Canada, is a real good example of a Democratic Socialist nation which has definitely not failed.

We shall continue this discussion after the comparison below of Norway's Democratic Socialism compared to the United States Unfettered Capitalism.

The bit about Mark Twain's travel philosophy is so ironic.

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness."

Mark Twain lived from 1835 to 1910. Before mass communication had arrived. Before airplane travel had arrived. Before the modern era of easily getting information about anything you want to know about had arrived.

I think what this person is doing with her frequent use of this Mark Twain quote is what is known as Virtue Signaling....

Virtue Signaling is the act of publicly expressing moral opinions or displaying awareness of social issues primarily to enhance your social standing, boost your self-image, or demonstrate your membership in a specific group. The concept of Virtue Signaling is most often used by those on the political right to denigrate the behavior of those on the political left. It is similar to the idea of grandstanding.

I think other than traveling to various locations to gain an awareness of the various cultures of our huge world, and thus magically becoming immune to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness, just doing some studying via something like Google, might work better, because travelling to various nations has not seemed to have had the Mark Twain effect on this person.

In 2026 you really do not need to travel all over the world to enlighten yourself as to all the varying ways people live on our planet. Just travel the United States. A melting pot of all the world's cultures. A fact which the current World Cup visitors to America, from all over the world, are being delighted to discover.

And how in the world can anyone be so deluded as to think they have somehow gained a perspective from traveling which has made them immune to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness, and still somehow think Trump is okay?

Totally, bizarrely perplexing....
